COMX is an annual exhibition featuring work from University of Gloucestershire's Game Technologies students. It rebrands and launches a new website each year.

Branding

Myself & Sam Carrier took on the challenge of revamping the COMX 2022 brand. We delved into past COMX designs, which mostly stuck to similar themes. Wanting more colour freedom, we went with a white logo, giving us the flexibility to play with vibrant gradients behind or within it.

If you're interested in a closer look at COMX 2022's branding, I've created a Behance post delving further into the guidelines which is linked below.

Website

This was our first experience creating a complex website, complete with a content management system and a registration/login system. Learning as we progressed, our primary goal was to establish essential functionality, with key pages including Students, Student Teams, Awards, Livestream, Gallery, and a login page.

I dedicated effort into letting students personalize their own profiles, creating a system to allow them to update their profiles with an about section, top skills and team roles. (The site the server is hosted on is a bit dodgy, refresh a couple times!)

  • COMX - Team Page
  • COMX - Awards

A personal goal of mine was to instil pride in students for being part of this event, ensuring the website looked as professional as they deserved. After launching the site and receiving extremely positive feedback from staff and students, I felt immensely proud of our work.

Livestream

Typically an in-person event, COMX ventured into livestreaming in 2021 due to COVID restrictions. This was through the use of Microsoft Teams, it faced a lot of challenges, resulting in a difficult viewing experience marked by numerous technical faults and audio issues.

Knowing these issues, I proposed using Twitch to livestream COMX and was tasked with preparing the stream. Aiming for a professional presentation, I implemented transitions, separate scenes for game trailers, and a main camera for student interviews, facilitated by two skilled interviewers. The only drawback was that it was all linked to a singular laptop, which became challenging to manoeuvre during busy moments at the event.

It was a really successful stream with barely any errors and received lot's of positive feedback. You can view the first half of the stream linked below.

Elementor Award

While working on the website, I discovered that the website builder plugin we used, "Elementor," features articles about the best websites created with it each month. Encouraged by positive feedback, I applied to be considered for the top ten list, and to our delight, we secured the 7th spot. An article was written about our site, and here's an excerpt from it.

'Color is splashed throughout the website, from subtle gradients to vivid full-width canvases marking sections. Visitors will also be drawn by the aesthetical structure of box grids with rounded corners matching the overall smooth look and feel of the page. The website is bright, fun, vibrant, and evokes a sort of childlike wonder.' View the full article below.

This project was incredibly enjoyable and educational, providing valuable insights into web design, back-end web development, branding, and event management. It significantly boosted my confidence and helped me step out of my comfort zone.

Furthermore, the Game Technologies department was so pleased with our work, they have decided to use our brand and logo for future COMX event's too, which is an absolute honour.
